Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni says he doubts former MASLOC boss Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu is actually in custody and has called on authorities to disclose her exact location.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, June 20, Manasseh questioned the lack of clear communication from government following her extradition and arrival in Ghana.
“As I sit here I cannot trust that Sedina Tamakloe is in custody just because somebody tells me she is in custody. I don’t trust that,” he said.
Manasseh argued that Ghanaians have long suspected that some influential convicts are kept in undisclosed locations instead of serving time in prison.
“Long before her coming in, I have heard and many people in Ghana may also have heard that we have a system in this country where some influential people when they are convicted and said to be in jail don’t actually go to prison,” he stated.
He described the practice as troubling and said it creates room for people to be moved in and out of custody without public knowledge. “It is a whole lot of mess,” he added.
The journalist insisted there is no reason for government to withhold details of where a convicted person is being held.
“I don’t think anything prevents this administration from telling us that look, this person has come in, he came in on this date, he is in Nsawam prison or he is at the Cantonments Police cells and if everybody goes there they will find him,” he said.
According to him, the absence of clear information only increases public suspicion and weakens confidence in the justice system.
“What stops the government from telling us where she is, which prison, which police cells she is being kept?” he asked.
Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in absentia in 2024 and sentenced to 10 years for causing financial loss to the state and stealing. She was recently extradited from the United States after failing to return from a medical trip during her trial.
Authorities say she is expected to serve her sentence, but have not publicly confirmed the specific facility where she is being held.
