Member of Parliament for Suhum, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, has revealed alarming accident statistics on the Suhum stretch of highway, urging government to fast-track safety interventions.
Presenting the figures in Parliament, Hon. Bekoe said the stretch has recorded 434 accident cases between January and May this year alone.
*The monthly breakdown provided by the MP:*
- *January*: 104 cases
- *February*: 84 cases
- *March*: 134 cases
- *April*: 42 cases
- *May*: 30 cases
“With these staggering statistics, will the Minister be kind to push this project in the next budget?” Hon. Bekoe asked, pressing the Health Minister to prioritize emergency health infrastructure for the area.
The Suhum MP said the numbers show the highway remains a major death trap for commuters, despite past interventions. He stressed that the high casualty rate puts pressure on the Suhum Government Hospital and other nearby health facilities, many of which lack adequate trauma and emergency units.
Hon. Bekoe called for urgent measures including improved road design, better signage, speed control, and a fully functional emergency department at Suhum to handle victims.
The Suhum stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway has been flagged for years by road safety officials as one of the most accident-prone corridors in the Eastern Region.
